Collection and reuse of biological materials

The section currently pursues the following objectives:

  • Networking of DGKL biobank activities with national and international biobank initiatives (e.g., TMF Biobank Working Group, BBMRI, ISBER)
  • Coordination of biobank activities within laboratory medicine
  • Standardization of organization, structure, and operation of biomaterial banks:
    • Harmonization of legal, ethical, and data protection aspects for the establishment and operation of biobanks
    • Know-how transfer between existing/emerging and potential new biobank initiatives within laboratory medicine
    • Implementation and development of biobank standards
    • Creation of SOPs
  • Quality assurance and quality management of biobanks:
    • Establishment and implementation of proficiency testing for quality assurance of, e.g., transport, storage, and processing of biomaterials for both DGKL members and other specialties
  • Strategic alignment and bundling of biobank activities within laboratory medicine with regard to:
    • Successful application for national and international funding initiatives to establish a biobank infrastructure
    • Strengthening laboratory medicine at medical faculties by developing biobank service offerings for better integration of laboratory medicine as a partner in translational clinical research
