A strong professional association
The German Society for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine
As a medical-scientific society, the DGKL represents the interests of colleagues in clinical chemistry and laboratory medicine in Germany, Europe and the world.

The mission statement of the DGKL
The DGKL sees the health, well-being and care of patients as its driving force and top priority. The members of the DGKL guarantee fast, precise and reliable laboratory diagnostics, which form the basis for correct diagnoses, sustainable prevention and successful treatments. In the spirit of modern medicine, the members of the DGKL are fully committed to scientific progress and continuous further development of the specialist discipline, thereby guaranteeing scientific excellence. With its expertise and its national and international network, the DGKL makes a significant contribution to maintaining and continuously developing the standards of care and quality in clinical chemistry and laboratory medicine.

Our mission
The DGKL …
provides important impulses and initiates discourse, particularly in the areas of diagnostics, prevention and therapy.
is committed to evidence-based medicine. It therefore develops guidelines - together with colleagues from other specialist disciplines and associations - and plays a pioneering role in quality assurance.
creates a framework that enables networked and interdisciplinary work and thus continuous success in research, teaching and practice.
works - also together with partners - to educate the public and offers well-founded information to interested parties and the general public.
is available to advise politicians.
promotes qualified young talent for clinical chemistry and laboratory medicine and - not least with the Young Laboratory Section - inspires young talent for the subject.
forms structures and represents the discipline nationally and internationally in order to share knowledge and learn from each other across national borders.
contributes to a cost-efficient healthcare system by providing objective data to detect diseases at an early stage and monitor the success of therapies.
Our values
The DGKL …
sees the health, well-being and care of patients as the driving force and highest guiding principle.
understands ethical standards as the foundation of its actions and decisions.
is committed to science and truth and acts independently.
is highly transparent, constructive and cooperative with open and clear communication.
Promotion and training
With its Foundation for Pathobiochemistry and Molecular Diagnostics the DGKL supports young scientists in particular with research and development projects. In an academy for young scientists funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG ), young scientists are specifically prepared for the independent implementation of research projects. The DGKL awards prestigious science prizes.
The members of the DGKL work actively to recruit and develop the next generation of doctors by providing training. The DGKL offers a curriculum for qualified scientists and doctors to train as clinical chemists.
Quality assurance
The reliability of laboratory medical examinations is essential for patient care. This is why the DGKL, as a non-profit medical-scientific society, is committed to the scientifically sound and professionally justified further development of quality assurance in laboratory medicine.
For example, the DGKL supports the continuous improvement of the effectiveness of the guidelines of the German Medical Association for the quality assurance of laboratory medical examinations (Rili-BÄK), which it helped to develop, in comprehensive patient care.
To this end, the DGKL works closely with the Reference Institute for Bioanalytics (RfB). The RFB, together with another institution, is the institute officially commissioned by the German Medical Association to carry out proficiency tests for external quality control.
As part of its membership of the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany (AWMF), the DGKL is also actively involved in drawing up guidelines on the appropriate use of laboratory tests.

Trade journal
The Journal of Laboratory Medicine (JLM ) is the official journal of the German Society for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (DGKL) and is affiliated with the Austrian Society for Laboratory Medicine and Clinical Chemistry (ÖGLMKC). The journal publishes articles on the latest developments in laboratory medicine.
